THE GOSPEL OF JOHN CHAPTER 14

THE GOSPEL OF JOHN - CHAPTER 14

Chapters 14-17

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

1. Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.
2 “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. (X JN 13:33, 36)
Why would we need a separate dwelling place and exactly where is this place?
I don’t believe we will need rest but perhaps it will be needed for family gatherings
Scripture states it is a place to stay
perhaps in the new Jerusalem (X JN 3:12; REV 21:2)
3 “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. (X JN 13:33, 36; 14:18,28)
Does this refer to the time when Jesus appeared after His resurrection?
This is not the coming of the Spirit nor the believers death, but rater Christ’s personal return (X 1Thes 4:13-18
4 “And you know the way where I am going.” (X JN 12:26)
5 Thomas *said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?”
Jesus’ destination was his Father in heaven
Jesus came from heaven and was going to return there
That which is of this earth can not go to heaven they must remain here
6 Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
This one statement encompasses our salvation.
It is as though Jesus is the door leading to the Fathers mansion
The door is narrow, because Jesus is the way the only way

Oneness with the Father

1If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.
2 Philip *said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”
JOHN 8:19 “…Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father; if you knew Me, you would know My Father also.
9 Jesus *said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? (X JN 12:45)
Was Jesus speaking of the physical appearance of God?
I don’t think so; for we know God is Spirit                (X JN 4:24)
I believe Jesus was referring to God the Father as being one with Him (X JN 12:45)
Paul calls the Father invisible God (X COL 1:15)
10 “Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works.
This is not the first time Jesus tried to explain His relationship with the Father (X JN 10:38; 14:11; 14:20)
This is a very hard concept for people of those time and even many people of today
11 “Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves.
Jesus had told them that if they could not believe that He and the Father are one then at least believe that He was from the Father and doing the will of the Father by the works He Jesus had done.
We too are best known by our works
12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.
Notice Jesus did not say or the works Jesus is saying if you believe in the whole package
Believe in Him as the Son of God
Believe He is doing the works the Father would have Him do (X JN 5:36)
Believe that He and the Father are One He in the Father and the Father in Him
13 “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. (X MAT 7:7)
We pray in the name of Jesus for this reason.
Jesus is our high priest who goes before the Father
By His sacrifice we are sinless and thereby granted authority to pray to the Father
Any good works we do in the will of the Father brings glory to the Son because He is our high priest and through Him all things are accomplished
14 “If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.
The following commentary explains it this way “This is not a formula to be tacked on to the end of prayers, but means praying for the same things which Christ would desire to see accomplished.  It is like using a power of attorney which a very dear loved one has given you.” [commentary Ryrie Bible]
As believers when we pray to the Father we pray in the name of Jesus, for He is our high priest
15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. (X JN 14:21, 23; JN15:10; JN 15:10; 1JN 5:3; IIJN 1:6)
Looking at these cross references we can readily see why John was the Apostle of love
All the teaching of Jesus should be considered as commandments (XJohn 14:23 ;  II John 1:6 )

Role of the Spirit

16 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
Jesus did not say the Sprit of God but rather another Helper
This statement confirms the Holy Spirit as a personage of God (another Helper)
Jesus was not to be replaced by the Holy Spirit but rather that they would not be left as orphans (X JN 14:18)
17 (a)that is the Spirit of truth, (b) whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because (c)He abides with you and will be in you.
(a) Jesus is assuring His disciples they could rely on the Holy Spirit because is truth (X John 15:26; John16:13; I John 4:6  )
(b)  The world did not receive Jesus and therefore would not receive the Holy Spirit
The world will neither see nor hear the Holy Spirit of God because He testifies of Jesus (X I John 5:7 )
Because Jesus abides in the believer by way of the Holy Spirit who testifies of Jesus
The world can’t accept the Spirit of God, and the world considers it foolishness (X I Corinthians 2:14 )
(c) He abides with you, and will be in you.
The Holy Spirit was active in O.T. times, but His dwelling in the lives of believers after Pentecost is different in that
This is permanent
It is true of every individual believer
The Holy Spirit will
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
Jesus appeared to His disciples after His resurrection to once again assure them
As for us He will come again to gather His church (X I Thes 4:13-18)
He is not coming in Spirit but rather in person to gather His bride (the church of followers)
19 “After a little while the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also.
This should not have been a shock (X John 7:33; John 16:16; John 16:22  )
Jesus is speaking of His victory over death and thusly reassuring His followers  (X  John 6:57 )
20 “In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.
Jesus speaks of “that day” also in John 16:23; John 16:26
In that day you will believe that Jesus the Father are one
Jesus told his disciples previous to this in John 10:38
And once again in John 14:11
21 “He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.”  (X John 14:15, :23; John 15:10, John 5:3; John 16:27 )
“The Christian faith works through love, and the measure of one’s love is the extent to which one keeps Christ’s commandments” [commentary Ryrie Bible]
Prov 8:17“I love those who love me; And those who diligently seek me will find me.
22 Judas (not Iscariot) *said to Him, “Lord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?”
This was Judas the son of James
Jesus was revealed to only those who were chosen beforehand by God (X Acts 10:41; 1:3  )
23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. (X Jn 14:21; Jn 15:10; I Jn 5:3; II Jn 1:6)
Notice here where Jesus speaks of God in the plural
I believe Jesus is talking about the:
The Holy Spirit
God is Spirit (X Jn 4:24 )
And Jesus the Christ
24 “He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent
25 “These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you.
26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
Luke (Lk 24:49 ) uses the phrase “…promise of my Father upon you”
John (Jn 15:26) tells us “…that is the Spirit of truth…”
Who testifies of Jesus giving remembrance of Him
27 “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.
In Jesus we may have peace (John 16:33
Jesus overcame the world (the carnal nature of man)
In the world we have tribulation
The carnal nature of man seeks its own destruction
That which is not of this world will be hated by this world
28 “You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. (X  John 14:2
Jesus knew they would morn His death, but He also knew they would rejoice after His resurrection
For they then realized who Jesus really was and that they would always have Him in Spirit with them
When we lose a follower of Jesus we morn our lose and rejoice at their gain
Does “ …the Father is greater than I” mean there is a hierarchy in heaven?
I believe that Jesus was referring to Himself in human form; Jesus said
I am in the Father and the Father is in me; (XJohn 14:11
“the Father and I are One” (X John 10:30 )
Although Jesus was all God and all man He, in his role as a human and the sacrificial lamb of God, did the subservient will of the Father who sent Him
29 “Now I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe.
Many of His disciples believed Jesus was a man sent from God
A great prophet
A great teacher
Jesus spoke plainly because He knew there confusion (X John 13:19 )
Jesus taught using stories or parables
Jesus taught using miracles
Jesus was removing all conjecture
30 “I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me;
Who was the ruler Jesus was speaking of?
Cesar?
The ruler of the known world
Satan?
The Greek word for world here is Kosmos and the word for ruler is archon meaning prince (XEphesians 2:2 )
In the Cross reference Paul calls Satan a prince of this world
Jesus states in the next verse the ruler of this world will be cast out
The last sentence “and he has nothing in Me”
Satan (the ruler of the world) possesses nothing in the person of Christ and has no power over Him whatsoever.
»This is more evidence of Christ’s sinlessness
31 but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I  do exactly as the Father commanded Me. Get up, xlet us go from here.
