THE GOSPEL OF JOHN THE MOVIE CHAPTER 16

YOU TUBE CLIP FROM THE MOVIE "THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

JESUS’ LAST HOURS WITH HIS DISCIPLES

  •  INTRODUCTION
  •         In chapter 15 we saw the compassion of Jesus when he comforted His disciples.  We saw how Jesus used the grape vine to illustrate the believers’ relationship to Jesus and the Father.  Jesus knew His disciples would grieve over His coming death.  They would feel abandoned.   In chapter 16 Jesus begins with a waning and proceeds to offer promises of comfort.  We will be studying the promise of the Holy Spirit, foretelling of Jesus death, His resurrection, and His prayer of promise
  •
  • THE WARNING
  •         1 “These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling.
  •        What did Jesus mean by stumbling
  •         Stumbling is to be tripped up by the unexpected.
  •         Jesus told His disciples these things that they might not be surprised
  •         Jesus knew they would stand against the world who was offended by Jesus and what He taught.
  •        Matthew 11:6 “And blessed is he who does not take offense at Me.”
  •        The world hated Jesus (X  John 15:18, 21
  •         2They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God. (X  John 9:22 )
  •        We read Paul, before he was enlightened, was one who would seek out and persecute the Messianic Jew (Jewish believers)
  •         (X Acts 26:10, 11 )
  •         3 “These things they will do because they have not known the Father or Me.
  •        This is not the first time Jesus has said this. (X JN 15:21 , 17:25
  •        They were and are hated by the world because we are called children of God
  •         4 “But these things I have spoken to you, so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
  •        Jesus did in fact tell them before we see it recorded in  John 13:19
  •        There was no need for Jesus to comfort them at the beginning
  •         At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry He was their teacher
  •         His hour had not yet come
  •         The Holy Spirit Promised
  •         5 “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
  •        Jesus did warns them earlier as recorded in JN 7:33
  •        We will read in JN 16:10 where Jesus tells them He is going to the Father
  •        John also tells them again in John 16:28
  •        6 “But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
  •        Jesus tells them in John 14:1 not to let their hearts be troubled
  •        Jesus explains that sorrow of their loss would be brief,  7 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
  •         It is not that the Helper could not come while Jesus was with them but rather there was no need for the helper while Jesus was with them.
  •         Jesus reinforces His promise not to leave them as orphans
  •        8 “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
  •        Jesus of course is referring to the Holy Spirit
  •        The Holy Spirit is what unbelievers refer to as their conscience
  •         However in the world of the unbeliever they are guided by the flesh and does not believe in Jesus
  •        The Libertarian view in short is as long as it doesn’t hurt someone else it’s ok to do it.
  • »       They would legalize all drugs, prostitution, just to name a couple of things
  •         10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;
  •         11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
  •        Who is the ruler of this world?
  •         In John 12:31 we read the ruler of the world will be cast out.
  •        We read a similar account in  Ephesians 2:2
  •         Satan as the ruler of this world will not rest until he bound for a thousand years Rev 20:2
  •        after which Satan is thrown into the bottomless pit Rev 20:7
  •        Notice the use of the past tense in verse 11
  •         Satan and his followers were judged and thrown down to earth
  •        This was Satan’s judgment to be cast out of heaven
  •         12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
  •        Perhaps this refers to the torture Jesus was to endure prior to His crucifixion
  •         13 “But  when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
  •        The Holy Spirit is described as a guide to the truth
  •         The Holy Spirit like Jesus speaks what He hears
  •        What He hears comes from the Father who is truth
  •        The Holy Spirit reveal the future to the diciples.
  •         14 “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.
  •         In what ways will the Holy Spirit bring glory to Jesus?
  •        The Holy Spirit will bring remembrances of what Jesus did and said.
  • »       The Holy Spirit will bring clarity of those things Jesus spoke to them about
  •        The Holy Spirit will bring glory to the Son by His testimony of Him
  •          15 “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
  •         Jesus’ Death and Resurrection Foretold
  •         16 “A little while, and you will  no longer see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me.” (X Jn 7:33; )
  •        This statement must have sounded like double talk to His disciples.
  •         We see their confusion in verse 17  Some of His disciples then said to one another, “What is this thing He is telling us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’ ; and, ‘because I go to the Father’ ?”
  •        We will see in verses 18-19 the disciples deliberating on what Jesus had said to them
  •        17 Some of His disciples then said to one another, “What is this thing He is telling us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’ ; and, ‘because I go to the Father’ ?” 18 So they were saying, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’ ? We do not know what He is talking about.”
  •        I can detect an undercurrent of panic between the disciples over this confusing statement made by Jesus
  •        Therefore Jesus explains His statement as we read in verses 19-23
  •         19 Jesus knew that they wished to question Him, and He said to them, Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me’?
  •         20 “Truly, truly, I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but your grief will be turned into joy.
  •        The lamenting over his torture and death
  •        The joy when they realized He had risen
  •        Jesus uses the example of a women giving birth, something they were all familiar with.
  •        21 “Whenever a woman is in labor she has pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a child has been born into the world.
  •        22 “Therefore you too have grief now; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.
  •         PROMISED PRAYER
  •         23 “In that day you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you.
  •        The revelation of the personage of Jesus at His resurrected appearance left no doubt in their minds
  •         Except for Thomas who of course had to satisfy himself that Jesus was real and not just a ghostly apparition.
  •        Jesus promises the Father would honor their prayers. (X Jn 15:16 )
  •        24 “Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.
  •        In John 14:14 we readIf you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.
  •         What does it mean to ask “in My name”
  •        This phrase is translated from the Greek word onoma on'-om-ah which simply means by my authority
  •        When we as believers pray to either the Father or to Jesus himself we pray with the authority Jesus as our high priest has given us.
  •        Jesus spoke of joy being made full in Jn 3:29  and again in Jn 15:11
  •         The joy of knowing your prayers are heard and the fulfillment of the joy is when they are answered
  •        25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but will tell you plainly of the Father.
  •        The word figurative actually means proverbs (X Matt 13:34 , Jn 10:6 , Jn 16:29 )
  •          From the Greek paroimia par-oy-mee'-ah meaning a fictitious illustration:--parable, proverb
  •         He taught this way so those with ears could hear.  (X Mat 13:9 )
  •        In other words those who believe and love Jesus would be enlightened as to the meaning of the parable
  •         Even though Jesus illustrated His teachings, many times His own disciples did not understand (X John 10:6 )
  •        26 “In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf;
  •        Why did Jesus say He would not request of the Father?
  •        The next verse (V27) explains why Jesus
  •        27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father.
  •        Those who were with Jesus believed in Him because of the signs He had done (X Jn 2:11 )
  •         Notice here that Jesus qualified their belief by saying “you have loved me”
  •        We will read in Jn 16:30 they believed Jesus came from God because He knew all things
  •        28 “I came forth from the Father and have come into the world; I am leaving the world again and going to the Father.”
  •         29 His disciples *said, “Lo, now You are speaking plainly and are not using a figure of speech.
  •         30 “Now we know that You know all things, and have no need for anyone to question You; by this we believe that You came from God.”
  •         31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?
  •         32 “Behold, an hour is coming, and has already come, for you to be scattered, each to his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
  •        Jesus was referring to His arrest and torture.
  •         Peter would deny Him
  •         The other disciples would scatter from fear and take refuge in their homes or other places of presumed safety
  •        We, like Jesus should never feel as though we are abandoned
  •         We have the Holy Spirit as our constant guide and comforter
  •         We have Jesus who intercedes for us with the Father when the accuser attacks
  •         33 “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
  •        We read in Mat 26:31 that their scattering was foretold in Zechariah 13:7
  •         Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd,
  • And against the man, My Associate,”
  • Declares the Lord of hosts.
  • “Strike the Shepherd that the sheep may be scattered;
  • And I will turn My hand against the little ones
